About Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park

Situated in the northeastern region of Catalonia near the Costa Brava, Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park encompasses one of the last large wetland areas in Catalonia. Covering a mosaic of marshes, lagoons, freshwater and brackish ponds, reed beds, and dunes, it offers a vital refuge for a wide variety of flora and fauna. The park covers the floodplains of the Muga and Fluvià rivers, providing essential habitats for migratory and resident bird species. Historically, much of this landscape was drained for agriculture until protection measures began in the late 20th century, leading to restoration efforts that have revived the ecological integrity of the area. Today, it is a top destination for birdwatchers seeking to observe species such as Eurasian spoonbills, purple herons, and the endangered Audouin’s gull. Besides birding, visitors can enjoy hiking along well-marked trails, cycling through scenic routes, and visiting interpretive centers that provide insights into the park’s ecosystems. Key landmarks include the La Clota lagoon, the Sant Pere Pescador salt marshes, and the protected dunes along the coast. The park’s wetlands also play a crucial role in flood control and water purification. Its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea enhances the park's landscape diversity, making it a tranquil yet dynamic natural playground. Aiguamolls de l’Empordà invites visitors to reconnect with nature through quiet observation and immersive outdoor activities year-round.
